Class Summary

Clear, accurate operating procedures are essential to the safe and consistent operation of an industrial refrigeration system. This live virtual course teaches participants how to develop and organize facility-specific standard operating procedures using the ANSI/IIAR 7 format while supporting the operating procedure requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA 40 CFR Part 68.

Participants will learn how to convert process safety information, equipment documentation, operating experience, and system-specific practices into procedures that operators can understand and use. The course addresses the required operating phases, operating limits, consequences of deviation, corrective actions, safety and health considerations, safety systems, and the steps needed to operate the system safely.

Instruction will also address procedure quality and lifecycle management. Participants will examine how to write clear action steps, identify cautions and warnings, verify technical accuracy, involve qualified operators in review, control revisions, certify procedures as current and accurate, and make the approved procedures readily accessible to employees who perform the work.

The course is designed to help facilities move beyond generic or vendor-provided documents and develop procedures that reflect the equipment, controls, operating conditions, and responsibilities at their own facility. Practical examples will be used to demonstrate how an effective procedure should be structured and reviewed.

Who Should Attend

  • PSM coordinators and managers
  • Refrigeration managers and operators
  • Safety managers

Included Training Topics

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and regulatory importance of written operating procedures.
  • Organize industrial refrigeration SOPs using the IIAR 7 format.
  • Identify the operating phases that must be addressed in a complete set of procedures.
  • Develop clear operating steps using facility-specific equipment and process information.
  • Document operating limits, consequences of deviation, and the actions required to correct or avoid deviations.
  • Incorporate safety and health considerations, required personal protective equipment, chemical hazards, and safety systems into the procedures.
  • Recognize gaps, vague instructions, conflicting information, and other weaknesses in existing procedures.
  • Establish a practical process for technical review, operator validation, approval, revision control, annual certification, and accessibility.
  • Relationship among IIAR 7, OSHA Process Safety Management, and EPA Risk Management Program requirements
  • Purpose, scope, responsibilities, definitions, and references
  • Initial startup, normal operations, temporary operations, emergency shutdown, emergency operations, normal shutdown, and startup following a turnaround or emergency shutdown
  • Operating limits and the consequences of deviation
  • Corrective actions and safe operating responses
  • Safety and health considerations, chemical properties and hazards, exposure precautions, and personal protective equipment
  • Safety systems and their functions
  • Prerequisites, tools, communications, verification points, cautions, and warnings
  • Writing clear, sequenced, and usable operating steps
  • Technical review, operator participation, approvals, revision control, accessibility, and annual certification

Classroom Type

This is a live, instructor-led online class rather than a prerecorded webinar. Participants can ask questions in real time and work through practical examples focused on industrial refrigeration operating procedures.

Trainer Experience

Presented by Jet Stiffler — Founder and President of NH3 Training Center, LLC. She has worked in process safety management and risk management planning since the implementation of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA 40 CFR Part 68.
